Cell phone recommendations? March 5, 2009

Motorola RAZRIt’s time for me to upgrade my phone. I killed my pretty Gold Motorola RAZR (no, not the Dolce & Gabbana edition) by spilling a large glass of water on it back in September. I switched to my old Nokia 3595 until I realized my friend had gotten a new phone, so I’ve been borrowing her old Motorola SLVR since October. I really should give it back now that I’m eligible for an upgrade on my AT&T family plan.

Why blog about this? Well, I need your help picking a new phone. And since much of my audience likely consists of IABC members, I’m hoping that these communicators will be an insightful group.

My dilemma: I don’t do much with my phone. I’m not the stereotypical Gen Yer on my cell phone 24/7, checking e-mail, updating Facebook, sending pictures, etc. I use my phone for three things:

1) Make and receive phone calls.
2) Send and receive text messages.
3) Have a second alarm in the morning to make sure I actually get out of bed.

Why is that a dilemma? All the non-fancy, low-tech phones look unappealing and don’t seem high-quality. And the fancy, high-tech phones intimidate me.

I don’t want to be connected to the Internet from my phone; I want a break from the digital world. I like being disconnected from my virtual life for a while and I don’t think people need to get a hold of me at all times. I don’t want to be a slave to technology (or at least be able to pretend I’m not one).

The iPhone is appealing, even though I won’t use an eighth of its features. It’s just so pretty. I’ve tried to text message with it and my fingers are too big for the touch screen, and it’s expensive, so that’s off the table.

The only reason I’d consider getting a BlackBerry (aka “CrackBerry”) is because then maybe I could stay in touch better with my best friend from college. She’s a BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) addict—I think she’d even admit to that. But that’s not enough to convince me.

My tech-guru friend recommended the Samsung A767 or Samsung BlackJack II, but they look bulky. I need something small to fit in my “going-out purse”—the tiny wristlet that carries my ID, credit card, cash, apartment keys, camera and (hopefully) my phone. He also thought the Pantech Duo or Pantech Matrix might fit my needs, but they don’t have fabulous reviews and are a lesser-known brand. My old roommate mentioned she loves her Samsung SCH-u430, but I think that might be a Verizon exclusive.

Can anyone help me in my plight to find a low-tech, cheap, pretty phone able to fit in a tiny purse?

Try the Blackberry Pearl…it’s not as high-tech as the other Blackberries, it’s small, you can still text (although it will take a few days to get used to the double letter keys) and it can double as a camera.

You gotta get the iPhone! You’ll wonder how you ever lived without it. It’s sleek, easy-to-use, and loaded with great features (texting is a blast). Plus you get the App Store - thousands of cool little apps that will make your life more fun. Many are free. Not only that, it’s an iPod too!

Cyclone [Maximuscle]: this product was rubbish. I usually use Nutrisport products which are like a quarter the price of these, but someone told me to give it a try so I did.. it was nowhere near as good and cost a fortune!!!

Things you mentioned sounds right. But, consider this, suppose you integrated a little bit more? What i’m saying is, I don’t want to teach how you can run your site, but if you added extra content that can certainly grab people’s awareness? Just as a video clip or possibly a picture or even few to have viewers excited about what you mentioned.
